Many are not aware of the seriousness of gopher damage. Gophers like to den in cool protected areas. The most common areas that gophers will build their dens in is under bathtubs, foundations of homes and swimming pools.
Foundations:
Gophers will utilize water, gas and plumbing lines when tunneling. Since the ground is softer there and usually easier to burrow through, they can easily find their way under your foundation. The major problems with gophers burrowing under your home is instability. Since gophers remove dirt, there will be large pockets under your concrete slabs. Many think that their concrete will be strong enough to support any gaps, but it isn't. Take into consideration any water that may enter into the tunnels, especially if your neighbor enjoys the garden hose method. Can you imagine what will happen after days of short flooding, he decides or forgets to shut off the water? It has to go someplace. One the water has washed away more soil, you can get large cracks in your concrete, a serious problem if your floors are finished concrete or tile.
Bathtubs:
Gophers really love bathtubs! Anytime we have been to a seriously populated area, we always locate tunnels directly near the exterior walls to the bathtubs. We have seen one situation where the den was so massive underneath the tub that the inside of the home was filled with the scent of urine. With their contractor on hand, the tub was removed and we bagged 2 adult males, 4 adult females and 26 babies of different ages and litters. Once the contaminated soil and gophers were removed, the contractor put clean dirt in and some other things to make it new again, then the tub was put back in. That one area was so bad that within a one-week period, we removed over 300 gophers!
Swimming Pools:
Regardless of the size of your pool, if you have one, expect gophers. Whatever you do, NEVER - EVER use water to try to 'flush' them out. After the water has dried, and if the gophers have left, the tunnels will over-dry, collapse and fall away from the wall of the pool. We've seen many pools over the years that have cracks and broken walls. Homeowners are left spending thousands of dollars in repairs and most are not the individuals who were forcing the water into the tunnels.
