When it comes to Gophers and the safety of children, we are very serious.  Kids are always sticking their hands in places they shouldn't.  Most kids haven't even seen a gopher and wouldn't know what to do with one if it popped up out of the grass next to them.  Years ago, while working at a public area, we observed a lone child, in a sand pit that was acting bizarre.  He kept picking up his large toy dump truck and slamming it back down, then he would push it aside and then stomp in the sand.  As we moved closer, we quickly realized that he was trying to smash this gopher.  He was one of the larger gophers we have ever seen and he was not backing down from this small boy.  He was to big and agitated to try and handle so we quickly eliminated it.  Removing the gopher from his sandy tunnel, the young boy asked if he could keep it.  Just then, his mother showed up, horrified!  (This happened in an adjacent state) She started yelling at us for killing a defenseless animal.  As the veins began popping out of her forehead, one of the guys in charge of this public area pulled up on his golf cart.  He got her attention quickly by interrupting her and saying that he had been watching with binoculars and that she was lucky we had come along to rescue her kid.  He went on to tell her that she's lucky her kid wasn't bitten and added that he would be placing a call to the state child welfare officials.  With a wink, he drove off, leaving her with her son in hand and a blank look on her face.  Grabbing a bag, the gopher was put in it and this is when she asked to "look at it".  We showed her the gopher, teeth, claws, everything.  Her friends had come over, after a while more, many others were around us.  People were shocked at the size of the gopher and teeth.  Her son told us that the gopher had pushed up out of the sand and started hissing "like a snake" at him and when he tried to push it back into the hole, he tried to bite him!  He first threw his toy soldiers at it, the gopher chewed on them and continued his hissing.  He said that he decided to bury the gopher, using his dump truck, when that didn't work, he decided to run it over.

There have been very serious gopher bites, ours especially, however, lets talk about something that also hangs out in gopher tunnels.  Snakes.  In our area, we have many snakes that live off of gophers.  Safe and poisonous snakes alike.  From experience, there is absolutely nothing worse than having a deadly snake come out of a gopher tunnel and strike at you.

Gophers have been trapped inside bathrooms, usually with a child locked inside.  These gophers tunnel under foundations, following water, sewer and gas lines.  If ever you're in this situation, throw a towel on top of it and exit the room, be sure to quickly close the door behind you, so the gopher doesn't move into other rooms.  If your child has been bitten, immediately contact you're doctor and follow his directions.  First chance you get, call us or another wildlife control specialist to remove the gopher.  You do not want to leave it in there for someone else.  Keep in mind that the gopher may exit the way he came in, which is often the case.
